Despite the fact that The Dad and I eloped, I love a good wedding. I love seeing the pretty bridesmaids all dressed up and the groom and groomsmen cleaned up and looking fancy. The music is always wispy and angelic. The lighting is always romantic. And the decorations are always dreamy. This is the way all weddings are.
Presumably all of the effort that goes into the marriage show is due to the fact that the bride and the groom are hopelessly devoted to each other for now until the end of time.
Such is not the case of the Kardashian and her husband what’s-his-name. Their marriage “made in heaven” lasted just short of 73 days. I didn’t watch their televised wedding but millions of viewers did. Sponsors paid for advertising and, thanks in part to any number of products, the bride and groom were afforded a wedding that only existed in fairy tails.
Unfortunately, their marriage was something that only existed in fairy tails as well since they have now filed for divorce. Please understand that I am not a staunch no-divorce proponent, but I staunch no-using-your-wedding-as-a-publicity-stunt proponent. The sponsors must be devastated at the thought of their advertising budgets breaking in order to support the whim of a … of a … what are the Kardashians ,again? I forget: Did they cure cancer? Or are they actively working to solve the homeless problem? Or was it because they bought a TV station and didn’t know what to do next?
Unfortunately the former Kardashian super-couple is not the only celebrity couple who failed to adhere to that “till death do we part” business. There was the infamous Britney Spears marriage that lasted, not days, but only hours. Kenny Chesney and Bridget Jones stayed married long enough to go to their lawyers’ offices. And, of course, Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie were married in, what I believe to be, an effort to possibly bring The King out of hiding. When Elvis was a no-show, their marriage was a no-go.
I hate to see any marriage fail regardless of how drunk-in-Vegas the bride and groom were. The whole country does. All it takes is a browse through any newspaper or through any news blog to realize that the sanctity of marriage is a very real concern for many citizens of our country.
For years now, we’ve fought and fought against marriage for just any “couple”. We’ve said that marriage should only be for a man and a woman who are in love. However, the problem with marriage lies not with same-sex couples desiring a union to bind them with their true love. The problem lies with the couples who, for reasons other than love, for reasons other than devotion and dedication, for reasons that appear to be materialistic and are based in sensationalism, choose to make a mockery of marriage through the shows and then subsequent public split.
Until we ban unions for those couples, the sanctity of marriage will always be in jeopardy.
