The Last Day of School

The last day of school, just 12 short weeks ago, a co-worker said to me, "I have lots of projects planned for the summer. I'm going to work around the house and get so much done."

I said to her, "I wish I were a do-it-yourself'er. I'd do all kinds of things around my home. But, I'm not, so I won't."

As I start the new school year, I vow to never, ever say that again.

Over the course of our "break", we* have re-done our bathroom, including new tile, flooring, sink, toilet, counters and lights.

Oh look. The underworld under my house.
Because we did the tile ourselves, we then got to jack-hammer through our foundation and replace our shower pipes. Note: Grout doesn't go down drains with any kind of success.

After The Daughters broke the recliner and then covered it up, we fixed the recliner twice before moving it out of our living room to make space for the new recliner we had to buy.

The Dad cleaned out the garage because Daughter 2 is not little girl anymore and when she jumps up to "ride" the garage door as the opener carries the door upward, the chain will break and our garage door opener will be rendered useless.

When we emptied out the closet so we could jack-hammer through our foundation, we placed all of our winter outerwear into Daughter 1's closet. This was probably not a good idea since Daughter 1's closet rod collapsed dropping all of its contents into Daughter 1's bedroom floor. (PS - I fixed the closet, even lowered the rod to a more appropriate height, all by myself. No asterisk.)

As I start the new school year today, I look ahead to the last day of school when I will say nothing about being a DIY'er.  Instead, I will say, "I wish I were independently wealthy. I'd do all kinds of beach-front sitting all summer long."

It's worth a shot.

*In this post, "we" refers to The Dad. I couldn't be bothered to help because I was too busy telling him we were not DIY people.
