I had so much to do and so little time – story of every
momma’s life, right? This particular
night was no different. Realizing that I
had way too much to do to be messing with fixing a meal, as well, I told The
Dad that he would be in charge of grilling out steaks. This would keep him out of the kitchen and I’d
have one less job to do!
I went shopping the night before and grabbed a few packages
of Chef’s Requested filets. I had three
coupons for their products, but I added a couple extra to my cart because they
were reasonably priced and, as was the case on this particular night, you never
knew who would be around at dinner time.
Tonight, it was my momma, whose house had flooded, and she was staying
with us until it was de-flooded. So,
we’ll just toss an extra steak on the grill.
Easy-breezy!
Of course, the best laid plans of mice and mommas often go
down the toilet in one swift flush, according to John Steinbeck anyway. I was elbow deep in pie making when I got a
text from The Dad… he had a late meeting.
I sighed a big sigh and contemplated ordering pizza but I
already had the cabbage and the potatoes ready to cook. So, I grabbed a charcoal bag and set it on
fire in the grill. Hopefully by the time
The Dad got home, the coals would be ready and he could finish cooking for
me.
Time flies when you’re having fun, though, and without much
notice, the coals were ready and The Dad was not, so I grabbed Chef’s Requested
Bacon-Wrapped Filet Mignon. I also grabbed
my kitchen shears because these puppies were wrapped in hard plastic, and I
knew I’d have to wrestle with them to get them out. However, it was as if Chef’s Requested had
packaged their filets for occasions such as this. Without any effort at all, I was able to peel
the back off and flop those filets right on the grill.
I returned to the kitchen, glanced at the clock, continued
on with everything else I had to do, and about eight minutes later, I returned
to the backyard and flipped the filets. I
walked back into the kitchen at about the same time as The Dad walked through
the door.
“I’m ready to cook,” he announced. I glared at him, handed him the tongs and
told him to take up the steaks in about five minutes. That man has such a great sense of timing!
This was SO delish!!! Just ignore the cabbage: my family did! |
Within the next 15 minutes, we had our plates full of filet
mignon, oven-roasted potatoes and grilled cabbage. The Dad took one bite of steak (which we
could cut with a butter knife since I hadn’t washed the steak knives yet!) and
said, “WOW! What marinade did you use?”
Ummm… I hadn’t marinaded the steaks.
“What seasoning did you use?” he asked.
Oh, wait… hadn’t done that either! The steaks came seasoned and seasoned
well!
“Do we have extra?” he wondered.
Ding! Ding! Ding!
Finally, I had done something right – I bought extra!! And actually, thanks to Chef’s Requested, I
had done everything right even when I had done it without much thought!
Lucky for us, we’ll be grilling Chef’s Requested quite a
bit. Lucky for me – it’s super easy. Lucky for The Dad, if he shows up on time, I
might let him eat some!
