When I was about ten (Whitney and my sister were about six), we took a trip from Oklahoma to New Jersey to see Whitney and her family, who had been uprooted from the heartland and dumped into a land with no Mexican food. We drove for about seventeen days (I think ... it might not have been quite that long) and finally arrived in New Jersey. Before going to see my mom's sister, Kay and her family, we settled into our hotel room.
My momma called her sister to check in with her while my sister and I jumped on the bed and my dad growled at us to quit fiddle farting around. We got ourselves shushed just in time to hear my mom say, "Well, put her on the phone."
This was my mom's side of the conversation, "Hi, Whitney Kay ... We're excited to see you too ... You've been good? I'm so proud of you ... Well, I don't know when we'll be over ... Okay--soon. We'll come as soon as I hang up the phone."
And as soon as she hung up the phone, we drove straight over there.
We were all thrilled that Whitney was excited to see us. We made our way into their Jersey neighborhood and pulled up to the front of their home. My cousins Whitney and Courtney came bounding out of the house to greet us, followed by my Aunt Kay and Uncle Jeff.
"We're so glad you're here!" my cousins squealed.
"We've been good all day!" my cousins bragged.
"And now that you're here," Whitney gushed, "we get candy!"
My mom leaned down to Whitney. "You get candy?" she asked.
"YES!" Whitney cheered, "My mom said as soon as you got here, if we were good, we could have some candy!"

Not all of us earned Tootsie Roll Pops, but all of us got one. |
That's right, my friends. My aunt Kay had bribed her children to be good with candy. That kinda explains what happened to sweet little Gavin, right?
I, on the other hand, had not been good, and I got candy anyway. Kinda explains what happened to my butt, right?
