Newport Beach’s CosmetiCare Plastic Surgery Center is home
to Dr. Michael Niccole, who – with one act of stupidism – firmly
established his daughters as life-long therapy candidates.
He was not abusive.
He was not neglectful. He just
couldn’t say no. As in, “Daddy, can I
have breast implants?” And he said, “Yes!”
Not only did he give his 18-year old breast implants, he
performed the surgery himself! A few
years later, he gave her a nose job. The
most appalling, however, may have been a few years before when he performed
plastic surgery on his 10-year old daughter to turn her cute outtie belly
button into an innie. If she were so
appalled at being an outtie at the age of 10, I hope she never ends up 47 weeks
pregnant with a 12 pound baby!
I completely feel the daughter’s utter angst at being too
small or too big or just plain different.
In fact, I remember being 18 years old and lamenting my lack of
development. I know of very few
teenagers – boys or girls – who are completely and 100% happy with their
anatomy at any given time before they turn 30.
This is just part of our psyche as human beings.
Despite my lack of development in my boobal region, the
thought never crossed my mind to alter my body with more than a pair of rolled
up socks. And I’m pretty certain that if
I approached my daddy with plastic surgery of any kind, you’d still be hearing
him laughing – and he passed away 10 years ago!
On the flip side of that was my high school best
friend. What I had in height, she
lacked. What I lacked in chest, she had
it. We were both equally miserable with
our lack-of or over- development of our bodies.
Oddly enough, without any cosmetic procedures whatsoever – aside from a
very unfortunate incident involving an entire bottle of Sun-in and a one hour
blow-drying session, we have matured into functioning, contributing, smart
adults. And aside from our higher
education, our dads didn’t have to pay for any of it!
Don’t get me wrong:
After breast-feeding two baby girls of my own, I can honestly say that
I’d be happy with perkier, firmer milk machines, but I am content enough with
all other areas of my life that I’m willing to live with floppy breasts as long
as I have a really cute and supportive bra!
Oh! And I’m 42 years old. I’ve earned the right to criticize my own
body.
Sadly, more than plastic surgery, Dr. Nicchole gave his
daughters the inability to love themselves.
He gave them the inability to find beauty within their own lives, within
their own bodies, within their own minds.
He gave them a lifetime of unhappiness at wondering how life would be
better if…
The sweetest and strongest words a parent ever speaks to a
child are, “I love you the way you are.”
Too bad Dr. Nicchole didn’t utter those words to his daughters instead
of recreating the beauty they had all be blessed with. Maybe one of his colleagues can implant a
backbone for Dr. Nocchole before he attempts to alter one of his own again.
